B. Braun

With ACTIVE, B. Braun has opened a state-of-the-art production facility for single-use medical devices in Melsungen. The goal is to further strengthen supply security, quality, and competitiveness at the Germany location. ERT Solutions is supplying robotics for this autonomous production concept.

The challenge

Increasing performance while maintaining the highest quality standards

ACTIVE stands for „Allover concept for Technological Improvement and Visionary Evolution“.

With this concept for technological and forward-looking developments, B. Braun is emphasizing its claim to set a new standard in medical technology with this new production facility.

Although the plant was newly built, the customer decided to integrate existing machines into the new smart factory.

To this end, the existing machines were specifically equipped with smart factory functions such as automatic door opening and communication with driverless transport systems.

Because in the manufacture of products for infusion therapy, every process step counts: production, material flow, and quality assurance must reliably intertwine to provide safe, high-quality medical devices.

The Solution

Fully automated manufacturing with digitally connected processes

In the new ACTIVE production facility, disposable medical items such as mini spikes, combi-stoppers, and CytoSet assemblies are now manufactured fully automatically.

A fully automated warehouse, automated guided vehicles and mobile manipulators, as well as fully digitized orchestration of all manufacturing processes, enable transparent and timely material flows for efficient production.

In total, more than 50 different machines and processes are autonomously connected to one another.
